Functional osteopathy and gentle techniques
Functional osteopathy works on the tissues (fascia, muscle, membrane) through slow, very low-amplitude pressure, with no abrupt manipulation and no cracking. It is the approach I offer in Asnières-sur-Seine to patients who are wary of structural techniques, to frail or older people, and to diffuse pain that mechanics alone do not explain.
The right approach when manipulation is not
Some situations rule out thrust techniques from the outset: osteoporosis, advanced arthritis, anticoagulant treatment, recent surgery, advanced age, or simply a legitimate apprehension. In these cases the functional approach is not a fallback: it is the appropriate treatment.
It is equally relevant where pain does not localise clearly: a permanent sense of tension, global stiffness, pain that moves around, discomfort that persists after an injury has otherwise healed.
- Patients uneasy about joint manipulation
- Older patients, osteoporosis, advanced arthritis
- After surgery or trauma, sensitive scars
- Diffuse chronic tension, a "knotted" feeling
- Jaw pain and temporomandibular disorders
- Stress-related functional issues: sleep, breathing, digestion
Fascia, tissue and micro-mobility
Fascia forms a continuous network of connective tissue enveloping muscles, organs and joints. An area that loses its suppleness, after a scar, a period of immobilisation or prolonged tension, mechanically constrains everything connected to it, sometimes at a distance.
Tissue work means guiding those tissues by hand towards their position of least tension until a release occurs. The movements are slow and unspectacular. What they demand instead is fine palpation and time, which is why the session lasts as long as a structural one.
What you feel during and after
During the session the dominant sensation is sustained pressure, never painful, often accompanied by deep relaxation: patients quite often doze off.
Afterwards, reactions are more gradual than with structural techniques: the benefit typically settles in over two to three days. Passing tiredness the same evening is common and normal. Drink water, sleep, and avoid intense effort for 24 hours.
Frequently asked questions
Is functional osteopathy less effective than structural?
No, they answer different situations. Structural work targets an identified joint restriction; functional work addresses tissue state and diffuse tension. In most sessions I combine the two according to what the examination reveals.
Is there any cracking?
None at all. Functional techniques use neither thrust nor end-of-range joint amplitude. That is exactly what makes them accessible to frail or anxious patients.
Can it be used during pregnancy or on a baby?
Yes, it is the reference approach in both cases. Gentle techniques are suitable throughout pregnancy and for infants, within the framework of the 2007 French decree.
